There is something rather wonderful about watercolour.
Not because every painting turns out perfectly (they certainly don’t!), but because it has a way of encouraging us to slow down in this crazy world that we live in! It teaches us to notice the curve of a petal, the tiny veins on a leaf, or the way one colour softly melts into another. It asks for patience...
Over the years I’ve had countless messages from people saying, “I wish I could paint like that,” or “I’d love to learn to paint in watercolour, but I don’t know where to begin.”
The truth is, none of us knew how when we started! Every single hopeful artist starts with a brush that feels unfamiliar, a little too much water, a flower too close to the edge of the page, and a quiet hope that perhaps, with practice, something beautiful might emerge.
I know there are so many wonderful ways to learn watercolour, and plenty of simpler, looser workshops out there designed to give you a quick and easy introduction to painting. But I wanted to create something a little different - and potentially unique to me (as I've found out that apparently I use use watercolour in a very unusual way: "Like a pencil" apparently). So I wanted my workshops to feel really special - a proper introduction to the more technical side of watercolour and the fine-art techniques I use in my own work.
So in these very carefully designed courses, we take our time. We look closely at colour, layering, water control, brushwork, detail and all those tiny decisions that slowly bring a painting to life. The finished piece is something I hope you’ll feel genuinely proud of - perhaps even something you’ll want to frame - but, more importantly, you’ll come away understanding a little more about how (and why) I do what I do with watercolour.
At the same time, I wanted the experience of learning to feel less intimidating and more like being invited to sit beside a friend at the kitchen table. No scrambling for the right supplies or wondering whether you’ve bought the correct paper or brushes. Simply opening a beautiful parcel, making yourself a cup of tea, and beginning.
Inside each pack you’ll find everything you need to paint alongside me: beautiful 100% cotton Fabriano paper, carefully selected brushes, artist-quality watercolour paint, a reference image, step-by-step instructions, and a full YouTube workshop that you can pause and return to whenever life allows.
There is no rush.
Some people will finish in an afternoon. Others might paint for twenty minutes at a time over several evenings. Both are exactly as they should be.
I’ve always believed that creating isn’t really about producing perfect artwork. It’s about finding those quiet moments where the rest of the world seems to fade into the background for a little while where your phone is forgotten, the kettle whistles in the distance, and your only job is deciding whether that next leaf needs an extra few veins.
Those moments are becoming increasingly rare, and perhaps that’s why they feel so precious.
One of the loveliest parts of launching these workshop packs is knowing they’ll find homes far beyond my own little studio. Whether you’re painting in a cottage in England, an apartment in New York, a farmhouse in South Africa or somewhere else entirely, I’d love to think we’re sharing the same peaceful hour, brush in hand.
I’m so happy that these packs are now available with worldwide shipping, making it possible for us to paint together wherever you happen to call home.
Thank you, as always, for allowing me to share my watercolour world with you. I really hope these workshops bring you not only new skills, but a little extra satisfaction, beauty and JOY to every day when you reach for your brush.
Happy painting,
Love, Libby x
